Chapter 3

Glass Skin

There is a painting of an owl over our fireplace.

It is mysterious with its dark blue and black coloring, and the way the eyes seem to be looking straight at you no matter where you are standing in the room.

Me and Emily (my wife/muse) have both admitted that it kind of creeps us out when we are there alone.

But we would never get rid of it.

The owl's head is cocked sharply to the left, and its wing beckons you into the dark forest behind it.

It is a subtle reminder to be open to mystery, my own curiosity, and the unknown.

I realized a long time ago that I get bored with something as soon as I understand it. I think that is what keeps me coming back to songwriting and the creative process.

As soon as I think I know what I’m doing, the next song is there to remind me that I don’t.

An empty page is a humbling thing. It’s the dark forest I feel a little afraid to step foot in, but I also can’t resist.
